Initial ratings observations on SORC 97. Unfortunately, for rating purposes, we had no light air by which to compare it's overall performance. But the ratings seemed to work fairly well although the predominance of strong winds would seem to favor some designs over others. Specifically the cats which can unweight and even fly a hull get a help that the MASF rating system does not account for. Heavier boats also seemed to do better against their rating in heavy air. Last year in heavy air the F25C's would leave fairly huge margins on the rest of the fleet. This year after the rating change the gap seems to have closed and have yet to be tested in light air where presumably it would evaporate completely. One item that we hope to include in the MASF system in the future is "underwater appendages". This would affect the Stillettos, the F25C's and the F27's. We would like to add a simple way to include the advantage of longer daggerboards, modified daggerboards and/or rudders. This might be something like the existing factor we add for rotating and wing masts. Please check elsewhere on this web site for race by race results as well as a downloadable spreadsheet with all results and ratings including the measurements for each boat. |
